Canada Collaborates With ZMT
In December 2025, the Kurdistan Trails Organization (KTO) and the Zagros Mountain Trail team had the distinct honor of welcoming the Canadian Ambassador to Iraq, H.E. Christopher Boehm, to Erbil for a memorable and meaningful visit. Seeking to truly understand the heartbeat of the initiative, Ambassador Boehm and his diplomatic team stepped onto the terrain itself, joining the KTO crew for a short, scenic hike.
The walk provided an open forum for the Ambassador to get to know the team, learn about ongoing projects, and see firsthand how the trail is taking shape. As they walked, the group discussed the vibrant rise of hiking and outdoor culture across the Kurdistan region, as well as the promising future of local sustainable tourism.
Beyond outdoor recreation, the journey fostered a deeper dialogue. Ambassador Boehm and KTO Executive Director, Barzi Bakir, discussed potential future collaborations and programs centered on peace, moderation, and conflict resolution, values deeply embedded in the trail’s mission. Expressing great eagerness and interest in KTO's vision, the Ambassador highlighted a shared commitment to future partnerships. This visit marked a powerful step forward, opening new pathways for international collaboration in the mountains of Kurdistan.
