Trail Information:

Stage 2 begins in the centre of Akre, in front of the old Ottoman administrative building. The path winds up on the streets through the town, climbing the hillside, then turns into steps that switchback to the summit. It’s a simple climb, on well maintained steps, and at the top of the remains of the ancient citadel that once looked out over the plains. The exact history is unclear, but if you’re luck you’ll mean someone local who will share a version of their understanding with you.

Beyond, the path cuts down off the citadel mound and into the mountains. Be careful in wet weather as the way down from the citadel can be unstable. The route rejoins an old pathway heading toward the pass. It is wide, built hundreds of years ago, and climbs slowly. There is not much shade, so be wary in hot weather. There is, however, a spring en route, and wonderful scenery. At the pass, it’s nice to pause to look back towards Akre, and on to the next valley. Be aware that on the hilltop above the pass there are the remains of an old military fort - see the map for details. This area was mined at one point, and local villagers do not go there. Do not stray from the path, or attempt to climb up towards the old fort - there may still be unexploded ordinance. Even if animals or shepherds appear to go that way, do not follow them.

The same pathway leads down from the pass, although it is less defined on this side. Be wary of cut branches in autumn, and of lose rocks under dried leaves and foliage. The village of Hashtga is below, with a mosque and a small shop, and beyond it, after another small climb, is the home of Mohammed. Mohammed’s house and garden have great views over the valley, and his family will be happy to provide tea, lunch or overnight accommodation if desired. A local guide can arrange a pick-up from here to take you back to Akre, Erbil, or on to another section of trail.
