Trail Information:

This stage begins in the mountain village of Saran, and then climbs through the orchards to meet a jeep track. From here, it uses this to reach the pass. This is an iconic place in the Kurdistan Region, as it is the crossing point between two majestic mountains, Karokh and Hendrin, both of which occupy an important place in Kurdish oral traditions. The high point is above 2000m, so this pass can often be covered in snow in winter. Please follow the guidance of local guides as to whether it is safe to hike.

On the eastern side the track comes down the mountains, and there may be villagers out foraging for wild mushrooms and other plants and herbs. There are springs crossing the path, and the ruins of an old church just before the village of Dargala. Dargala too is an important place for Kurds, known as the birthplace of many legendary guerilla fighters who battled Saddam Hussein’s troops. There is a homestay here and some small shops.
