Trail Information:

Please note: this section of trail is currently not accessible from Hashtga to the pass at Peres mountain.

The route leaves Hashtga and descends into the broad valley. Small animal paths lead across a river, which can be knee-high in spring, and across rolling terrain. It enters the town of Dinarta, where there are small shops, then follows the road up the switchbacks to Peres Mountain. We have been advised that walking through Dinarta at this point in time is not permitted, so please do not attempt to do so until further notice.

At the top of the mountain there is a small Peshmerga base, and scenic views back towards Hashtga, and in the other direction to the Barzan valley. You can see the Great Zab river, and on a clear day, Turkish mountains to the north too. The route ahead is also visible. There’s a step down from the road, which can be slippery in wet weather, and then the path follow shepherds’ tracks around the contour of the hillside, before descending into the drainage, and eventually into Safti village. This section has been only lightly scouted by our team, and needs improvement to find the exact track. We also advice against walking from Peres to Safti at this point too until it has been further defined and we have clearance to use the whole area.
