Paths of Peace: Dialogue in Motion on the Trail
Peace is often regarded as an elusive word, a broad, perhaps utopian concept that feels difficult to grasp because it is not a concrete object we can touch. In reality, peace is not a singular destination, but a mosaic of achieved objectives. At the heart of each of these objectives sits the human element: the community. Recognizing that community is the lifeblood of the Zagros Mountain Trail (ZMT), and that peace is the essential foundation for a community’s longevity, the Paths of Peace project was born.
Implemented from late 2025 through early 2026, Paths of Peace was designed to strengthen inclusive leadership and conflict prevention within the Kurdistan Region. Funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), the project embraced a context-specific, community-centered approach to peacebuilding. By creating new avenues for participation, the initiative successfully generated trust and reinforced local resilience. Crucially, the project sought to amplify voices that often remain on the periphery; by addressing the structural barriers facing women and rural residents, it ensured that leadership and participation were truly inclusive across all dimensions.
The Journey in Numbers and Action
The project’s mission was realized through three immersive on-ground activities and a strategic social media campaign:
Targeted Outreach: Two dedicated one-day walks were held for women and the youth of Rawanduz, creating safe spaces for dialogue.
The Residency: A centerpiece three-day residency spanned several historic stages of the Zagros Mountain Trail.
Impact: The project reached 47 direct beneficiaries, achieving a purposeful gender balance of 23 women and 24 men.
Dialogue in Motion
The core philosophy of Paths of Peace lies in the simple, ancient act of walking. We operate on the belief that dialogue works best in motion. When we slow down to the pace of a trail, new possibilities emerge. An embodied presence on the earth helps soften entrenched positions, allowing for a level of vulnerability and connection that a boardroom cannot provide.
Throughout this journey, we discovered that peace is not a static trophy to be won, but a daily necessity to be practiced. Utilizing the scientific reality that our most creative and empathetic thinking occurs while walking, we transformed peace from a utopian ideal into a pragmatic, achievable objective.
By placing genuine human needs at the center of our discussions, we witnessed the evolution of a more peaceful community. The breathtaking landscape of the Zagros Mountains served as more than just a backdrop, it was a catalyst. In nature, the weight of conflicting ideologies begins to lift. As walkers move together toward a single geographical destination, the differences in their opinions begin to harmonize, proving that even with different perspectives, we can all walk the same path toward a shared future.
